Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects more than 50 million people worldwide each year, with major health, social, and economic consequences.
The burden is particularly important in ageing populations, where older adults are increasingly vulnerable, while TBI in working-age adults also has a major impact on healthcare systems and society.
Launched through the fundraising Gala of 20 March 2025, GeoTBI was developed through a scientific collaboration between the NeuroCentre at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and EPFL’s Geospatial Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory (GeoME). Using more than 10 years of neurosurgical data from the Canton of Geneva, the project explores where and in which populations TBI cases are concentrated. The analysis revealed that TBI cases are not evenly distributed across Geneva, with distinct high-risk areas for working-age adults (red contours) and seniors (purple contours).
By identifying populations and areas at higher risk, GeoTBI can help guide more targeted prevention strategies and support healthcare professionals and policymakers in deciding where prevention efforts may have the greatest impact.
With continued support, this approach could be extended to other regions, transforming health data into practical tools for prevention.
