Integrating Wearable Technology in Neurosurgery Research Award

We are happy to announce, in collaboration with Montres Boral SA, the new EANS Foundation scholarship: the Integrating Wearable Technology in Neurosurgery Research Award.

The objective of this award is to fund a research project in neurosurgery that plans to integrate wearable technology data in their evaluation of a clinical question (e.g. surgical outcome, non-operative follow-up, evaluation of natural history of a disease). Studies should use validated clinical measures.

Importantly, the study does not require the wearable technology to be at the core of the research question, but instead the wearable technology can be used as an additional assessment tool.

Data from the watches will be provided by the manufacturer of Air’n Outdoor watches (Montres Boral SA).

Criteria

• Original clinical research in neurosurgery
• Research ethics approval
• EANS membership of at least one member of the research group

Applications must include

1. Cover Letter (1 page)

• Including a statement of disclosure of competing interest, funding sources, industry sponsorship

2. Research protocol (3 page maximum)

• Names of Investigators
• Involved Institutions
• Introduction/Background of Clinical Problem
• Methods
• Timeline, Budget and Study feasibility
• Research Ethics approval letter

** Applications may also be considered if research ethics approval is still pending, provided that the study has already been submitted to the relevant ethics committee. However, ethics approval must be obtained before the award can be provided.

3. Letter from the department chair (1 page)

• Indicating sufficient support for the study
• Indicating that the research team are capable of undertaking the research
• For studies without research ethics approval, statement from the chair that submission to the ethics committee has been done

The awarded team will be required to provide regular 6-month progress reports, outlining the progress of the research to The Foundation’s Board.

APLICATION DEADLINE

Applications must be submitted by 30 April 2027.

Following the evaluation process, applicants will be notified of the outcome by 30 June 2027.
